The Secret to the Best Mojito Cocktail

Mojitos taste like vacation

For me, nothing puts me in a more ‘vacation relaxed’ frame of mine than sipping on a Mojito. Doesn’t matter if I’m on vacation or in some local bar after work.  One taste of it and I’m transported back to my single carefree twenties!

Just can’t get a decent mojito

What’s beautiful about this cocktail is that beautiful blend of tart lime, the sweetness of sugar and herby mint.  Mix in some booze, ice and top it off with soda water and you have yourself one tasty cocktail.  It’s relatively easy to make with a simple and straightforward recipe.  However, many people can easily get it wrong.

Believe me, I’ve had countless Mojitos gone wrong all over the world because they left something important out.  Perhaps, the mint is not muddled, there’s too much sugar or worse, no sugar or maybe someone didn’t put in enough citrus.

Ugh…that does NOT taste like vacation.  That tastes like a bad day at work.

The magic ratio

The key to a perfect Mojito is to balance all of the flavors.  You need to maintain a 1:3 ratio of sugar to lime, that’s one part sugar, 3 parts lime.

You can add more mint.  You can use less mint.  You can muddle strawberries/passion fruit/blueberries into the mix to make a fruity mojito or leave our the booze for a virgin mojito. Make an entire pitcher of it for when guests come over or for yourself if you are feeling festive, or whatever! Go crazy! However, if you want it to taste good then remember to keep that 1:3 ratio of sugar to lime.

Description

Tips and tricks on how to make a delicious mojito each and every time. Tasty as a fruity mojito, virgin or loaded up with alcohol. #cocktails #drinks #mojito

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp lime juice (fresh is best)
  • a small handful of fresh mint
  • 1 oz Rum (or vodka as I prefer)
  • Soda water (2-3 oz)
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. In a glass, mix 1 tbsp of sugar with 3 tbsp of lime juice and 1 oz of rum or vodka.
  2. Add mint and muddle with a spoon, muddler, end of a rolling pin, etc.
  3. Make sure the mint leaves ‘bleed’ into the lime and alcohol mix.
  4. Add a handful of ice, and then top off with soda water (usually 2-3oz).
  5. Stir together and enjoy!

Notes

For a virgin mojito, omit the alcohol.

For a fruity mojito, add a handful of fruit or berries with the mint and muddle together with the lime and sugar.
